Who we are
Quito Eterno is an educational program that is part of the Historical Center Corporation of Quito, a non-profit organization. Since 1998 this organization has developed specialized projects which
aim to rescue, revitalize, and preserve the traditions and culture of the city .
Through
Quito Eterno, the Corporation offers educational, cultural, and
spiritual forms of tourism. Our goal is to open the doors of our legendary
city, a site where powerful civilizations, famous artists, great
thinkers, and storybook heroes have developed their legacies. These
legacies still appear today within the legends, stories, and oral
traditions of our culture.
What better place to explore the world's diversity
than in the "middle of the world,¨ where a great quantity of
the Earth's cultures and creations come together?
The physical evidence of centuries of civilization
shows us the historical course of this area, and explore the ruins to
discover the secrets behind the stones, and thus the wisdom of our
people. Quito Eterno attempts to uncover the identity of Ecuadorian
people, made rich by the magic of our indigenous lineage and the
knowledge brought to us by the arrival of the Spanish.
What motivates our work?
- Rediscovering the legendary sun culture in the
middle of the world.
- Respecting the indigenous vision which integrates
nature's wonders into human life.
- Appreciating the complex heritage of the mestizos
in Ecuador.
- Remembering the heroes that dedicated their lives
in order to build our country.
- Honoring the painters and poets who left us the
spirit of their visions, which so profoundly affects all modern
expression in Quito and Ecuador.
As described
by Piedad y Alfredo Costales in The Kingdom of Quito,
Quito is:
"The
indigenous mecca of sun worshipers, the site of harmony for primitive
peoples from both North and South America, and possibly those from
Oceania, the sea, the plains, and from across the mountains; they come
in search of the path to the site of Vertical Sun, the site where some
aborigines thought they could actually touch the sky."
