The Spanish Conquest

The arrival of the Spanish produced the syncretism from which was born the actual culture of Ecuador: expressions of indigenous culture covered by European forms.

With miscegenation and mestizaje came the disappearance of the indigenous religion, but elements like the conception of time, certain idiomatic forms, traditional culinary practices, etc. were conserved, giving evidence to the importance of the indigenous presence.

Quito was founded anew by the Spanish upon the ruins of the indigenous city. With the support of the religious orders, the city of San Francisco de Quito was built. Over time the artistic expression of the city reached great heights, arriving at its maximum expression in its own artistic style, the “Escuela Quitenia.”

At one point, The Relicario (locket) of American Arte was one of the terms used to describe Quito. The city was also associated with the great art capitals of the world—the little Paris, they called it—accurately expressing the inclination the city had toward art.
